The Director of Education Policies is responsible for compiling up-to-date information and analyzing long-term educational trends in order to provide progress reports to state policy-makers, education leaders and others related to SREB's Goals. The Director coordinates reporting related to SREB’s Goals for Education: Challenge to Lead, and with the Vice President for Education Policies, works to carry the messages of the Goals to all stakeholders in the 16 SREB states. The specific responsibilities include working with SREB and state agency staff to collect and analyze information and to track progress toward goals. The three major themes of the Goals are: (1) transitions for students, pre-kindergarten to elementary schools, middle grades to high school and high school to postsecondary education and careers, (2) closing the gaps in educational performance of students, and (3) creating systems of schools and colleges that are aligned and accountable.

The Director will have wide experience in education, preferable at both K-12 and higher education institutions, in state agencies and with policy makers. Primary responsibility is to develop relationships and share information with staff in state K-12 and higher education agencies, especially in academic and program areas.

The Director also responds to a variety of requests from SREB constituents, including Board members, legislators, educational officials, legislative and executive staff, and the news media. The Director will represent SREB at selected state, regional and national conferences and assist the president and vice president with projects as assigned.

Written and oral presentations are prepared for a variety of audiences that include state policymakers, educators and administrators. The Director will supervise a group of research associates in compiling and collecting data and information related to Goals for Education: Challenge to Lead and will ensure that the information is developed into materials for various constituencies.

The director will have a master’s degree in a field of study related to the job duties; a doctoral degree in a field related to the job duties is preferred. The director will have a working knowledge of office-based computer software to organize and analyze date, maintain databases and produce reports. Excellent writing skills are required.
